Graduate job hunters looking for degree-level work in the public sector may be interested to hear that an employment expert has downplayed the severity of expected job losses in the sector following the general election. Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, said that he understood job cuts were inevitable, but that he disagreed with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)'s estimate that 500,000 jobs would be lost over five years. He added: "Whoever gets into power post May 6th, it is inevitable that these cuts will come into force and that jobs will be lost." "I guess the key is how quickly. My feelings are that is it inevitable that these job cuts will come. I wouldn't agree that it could be up to half a million. I think that is excessive." His comments come soon after the CIPD said it thought there would be a ten per cent cut in the core public workforce after the May 6th general election.
