Unemployed graduate job hunters may be interested to hear that the chancellor of the exchequer has extended the young person's work guarantee in this year's Budget to March 2012. The initiative, introduced earlier this year, was meant to only go on until March 2011, but the chancellor, Alistair Darling explained that because unemployment had fallen, the cost of the running the scheme had also fallen, making it a cheaper prospect all round. In his speech, he said: "For younger workers, I have introduced a guarantee of a job or training for every 18 to 24-year-old after six months out of work, which is already proving a success. "This was to run until March next year, but with recover still in its infancy, we should not withdraw support too soon. I have therefore decided to use the money saved to extend our guaranteed offer to young people until March 2012." Joblessness figures released by the Office for National Statistics last week showed unemployment was down by 33,000 from the previous quarter.
