Cost
and time implications means many small to medium sized businesses
find recruiting graduates extremely
hard
Findings taken from a British Chamber of
Commerce survey on recruitment reports that the cost and time
implications of recruiting graduates and doesn’t take into
account the role that agencies can play.
The survey used 500 small and medium sized
business and identified these to believe that recruitment is the
biggest challenge that employers face because of the high costs
which can be incurred.
40 per cent of the respondents believed that
recruiting a new employee costs £2,00 or more, and 46 per cent said
they would never use recruitment agencies, because
of the high costs.
Tom Hadley, Recruitment and
Employment Confederation Director of Policy and
Professional services commented that “The length of time it takes
to recruit is often due to ongoing skills shortages — even at a
time of relatively high unemployment. We agree that finding the
right person is an extremely time-consuming exercise — in fact,
this one of the key reasons for using agencies with the experience
and networks to source and filter appropriate candidates.
“With regards to cost, the priority has to be finding the right
person for the job, someone who can contribute and make a real
difference. It is worth investing some time and resource in getting
it right. The reality is that the real cost of recruitment is
getting it wrong."
There is a strange belief that many agencies
provide poor recruitment processes, yet contrary to this the report
found 9 out of 10 businesses are satisfied with their recruitment
agencies. Hadley also went on to say that the survey shows that
around 50% of SME’s already use external agencies and are
satisfied, therefore the rest should be encouraged to consider
recruitment
agencies in a bid to solve their recruitment problems.
