Unemployment falls by 65,000 with thousands of new
jobs created in
London
New figures came out today that show
unemployment has fallen by 65,000 between March and May with
unemployment now sitting at 2.58 million, the number of people in
work climbed by 181,000 to over 29 million, the highest since late
2008.
Other figures released today are less
reassuring though with the number of people out of work for over 2
years rising by 18,000 up to 441,000 the highest it has been since
1997. Benefits claims have also risen in June with another 6,100
claims; this has partly been put down to a change in the benefits
system.
London benefited the most from the employment
increase with 61,000 people finding jobs, with the Olympics thought to be the major
contributor to this.
The figures released today do also suggest
that the private sector is beginning to fill the jobs void left by
the public sector, with ONS figures showing businesses creating
166,000 jobs between February and April compared with a 39,000 loss
in the public sector in the same period.
The youth employment market remains bleak
however with over a million unemployed, indicating that the
government still has a lot to do to get the job market back on
track.
