Many UK Businesses are failing with their training

A Recent study by Global Knowledge indicates that a large proportion of UK businesses are failing to meet the training needs of their employees, this is despite the fact training and development is highly valued by employees. The Study goes on to further suggest that of those businesses that do provide training for their employees, many do not properly evaluate its effectiveness.

A study into 700 employees both those involved directly in training and development of staff and other departments  found that 57% of those questioned did not feel that sufficient budget was allocated for their training and development with another 49% indicating that they would not be able to get time off for training from their employers. This research indicates there is still a large gap in the perceptions of employee training needs between businesses and their employees. Research carried out earlier this year by the Institute of Directors indicated that businesses felt that there was a skill shortage within the UK recruitment market; this further highlights the need for businesses to take charge of their own employees training and development.

The study goes on further to suggest that businesses that do undertake training fail to properly assess the effectiveness of it, with 21% of businesses indicating that they do not check whether training has had any impact and only 26% indicating that follow up discussions take place after the training. This indicates that many businesses are failing to plan their training efficiently and view training as a onetime event rather than a process where learning needs to be continually applied, practised, evaluated and adapted to ensure success.

This study suggests that Businesses must prepare training so that it both meets the needs of their employees whilst also ensures that the top line i.e. whatever outcome desired is fulfilled with adequate measures in place to ensure this.
