Government’s new tourism strategy discusses “double summertime” (DST)

daylight saving 150

There are plans being drawn up to improve the Graduate job outlook by changing the time zone

The plans will see the clocks move forward by an hour from GMT in the winter and a further hour in the summer, to match central European time. This would mean that the nights will be lighter and darker in the morning.

MP Rebecca Harris is leading the changes in the daylight saving bill in parliament. Her arguments for are:

  • Extra 235 hours of daylight after work per year
  • 100 fewer deaths from road crashed annually
  • Save £200 million a year for the NHS because of fewer accidents
  • Boost British tourism revenue by £3.5bn
  • Reduce carbon monoxide emissions through people leaving lights and heating off
  • Providing 40 per cent more business time overlap with other European countries.

The plans will also boost the recruitment industry with a boost  of around £3.5bn in the UK and generating 8,000 new jobs which will include sales jobs and many graduate jobs. For companies that deal with clients abroad, moving into the same time zone as other European countries has obvious benefits. Providing more working time in the morning for trading with Asian markets, yet it would have a negative impact for companies with dealings in the US.

Scotland implications are that their trade with Europe is worth £15bn annually, which when the time changed it will reduce the efficiency for Scottish companies.
