Work Placements, internships, apprenticeships valued highly
amongst most
employers
Rather than companies undertaking a narrow job
search, they should embrace the true talent of graduates and
understand what they can bring to their organisation. According to
Mary Walsh, head of diversity at HSBC, she was of the opinion that
too many businesses are ignoring the graduate talent available.
This comes after big names such as ASDA, and
Microsoft pledged to create more jobs for the UK, including
graduate jobs,
throughout 2011 in a bid to aide the economic recovery and the
government ‘pro jobs’ agenda.
However other experts suggest that because of
the increasing amount of people heading to university rather than
gaining work experience. This leads businesses to choose business
minded-individuals over those with a degree, making it increasingly
important to gain a wide portfolio of work experience and
apprenticeship/internship work and make their job search much
easier.
"An apprenticeship equips them with the skills
and experience they [graduates] need," claimed the marketing and
communications director for the National Apprenticeship Survey.
"Evidence shows that employers are fully supportive of an
apprenticeships programme; from large employers...to many thousands
of smaller employers across the country."
Also with globalisation opening up
opportunities world wide there is more reason for graduates to get
ahead by improving their ‘language and cultural skills’. More and
more employers want languages as a requirement for their graduate
recruitment, and with many international
students possessing a second language.
