Engineering sector 'still demanding graduates'

Engineering sector 'still demanding graduates' Many companies in the engineering sector are still demanding graduates despite the economic downturn, it has emerged.

Engineering recruitment website Gradcracker notes that a high proportion of firms are still actively recruiting graduates and placement students.

The group notes that many of the companies registered with its site are committed until August 2010.

Furthermore, the group feels that it is imperative for firms to continue their recruitment strategies in order to avoid skills shortages in the future.

Gradcracker director Sean O'Connor commented: "Companies who are freezing, or greatly reducing, their graduate recruitment now may well face problems in the future.

"When the recession does end, these companies could find themselves starting to get busier, but not having the people in place to cope."

Jonathan Evans, managing director of Discovery Graduates, recently claimed that figures released on the subject of graduate recruitment over the next year were unnecessarily negative, as many of the firms involved in the study are based in the finance sector.
