Students leaving school are applying for university straight away instead of taking gap years to avoid rising tuition fees
According to gap year companies the amount of school leavers applying for places has decreased due to the increase in tuition fees. Although the companies may be boosted by the amount of unemployed graduates who have no other option but to volunteer or take a gap year to come back when the job market picks up.
It is sad times for recent school leavers who aren’t going to get the chance to undertake a gap year, which can be invaluable for many people before attending university, let alone acquiring a job. Even when leaving university many graduates will be put off because of the amount of debt they will be laden with. Although the option of a mini gap year are still available, the whole experience of travelling abroad for up to a whole year is not available to many.
The governments increase on tuition fees has opened up a debate on the value of university, and whether it would be better to increase the amount of apprenticeships available.
