Half of UK businesses are planning to take on more experienced employees rather than graduates or school leavers
Research undertaken by Ethical Skills and Training (EST) has shown that 10% of employees are going to reduce the number of workers aged 18 to 24.
The lack of experience in this age range is the main reason why businesses are reluctant to spend on training graduates or school leavers. EST’s Elaine Barrett commented that "It's disheartening to think that many employers don't have faith in 18 to 24 year olds, consigning them to the employment scrap heap even before they have had the chance to get their foot on the career ladder,"
Many companies supply on the job training to school leavers and graduates, which companies outline the cost of training as a problem in recruiting graduates. This has meant that many companies cut down on cost for training graduates and spend between £100 to £500 for their first year of work.
Employment figures for young people and graduates done by the Office for National Statistics indicate that the graduate market is improving, with an increase of 79,000 people aged between 16-24 been employed.
