Former students in Scotland could land a place on a graduate construction apprenticeship thanks to the Commonwealth Games, which are being held in Glasgow in 2014. According to the BBC, construction skills company CCG will provide work for 50 people, including graduate job hunters, when it opens its facility in Lanarkshire to help with the £200 million development of the athlete's village. Over half of the vacancies will be graduate apprenticeships, the firm has said, while 60 per cent will be filled with local job hunters. Nicola Sturgeon, deputy first minister, said on a visit to the site: "This is a real boost, both for the construction sector in south Lanarkshire and for young people starting out in the world of work." Higher Education Careers Services Unit figures recently showed that the construction sector has been the worst-hit by the recession, prompting the Daily Telegraph to suggest that graduate job hunters should try other fields if they are not successful in finding employment.
