University leavers in London work more than 50 hours a week to get ahead and climb up the career ladder quicker
A survey conducted by Graduate prospects has shown that one in seven graduates in the UK and around 20% of graduates in London work more than 50 hours a week.
The survey of 22,000 employed and self employed graduates outlined that many graduates believe they have to work longer hours to keep on top of work, and prove themselves committed to their role.
Graduate jobs are becoming increasingly competitive which means many graduates in sectors such as the legal services, accountancy and Marketing are more likely to work more than they are contracted to.
Mike Hill, Chief Executive of Graduate Prospects said: "Gen Y has been regarded as the lazy generation, favouring life over work, but the research points to quite the opposite with many graduates developing as strong a work ethic as previous generations."
Yet still many companies are reluctant to take on younger workers and graduates, with 10% still planning to reduce the amount they take on in 2011-2012.
