Businesses can not afford to cut back graduate jobs in the north-east, according to one expert, who said that the area will suffer if university leavers are not given the help they need to gain valuable skills. Recent High Fliers research shows that 25 per cent of graduates intended to apply for postgraduate education because they are not confident with the current jobs market. Rachel Spence, head of member relations for the business section of the North East Journal and Evening Gazette, said that this would mean businesses would face an unskilled graduate workforce in the future. Graduates should also be given help to start up their own small enterprises, according to Ms Spence. She said: "If we are to build the skilled workforce and business owners of the future, young people need to be given a chance and employers willing to look to create those entry-level jobs." Martin Birchall, managing director at High Fliers, recently said that postgraduate education could be a "very expensive mistake" if the university leaver is just biding time until the graduate jobs market picks up.
