Graduates see tougher competition with hundreds applying for each vacancy

GraduateIs it all doom and gloom for ‘Graduates’?

Graduates up and down the country are seeing tougher competition than before, amid hundreds applying for each vacancy. Among this are graduates who have gained experience but been ousted from their jobs due to recession.

Graduates are facing an intense scramble to get a job, a poll of employers shows that the number of applicants for each vacancy has surged to nearly 70 applicants, and a decrease in the number of positions available by 7 per cent.

The increase in the number of applicants has also seen employers insisting on a minimum degree of 2:1, ruling out graduates with a 2:2 or less. Nevertheless Higher Education Minister David Lammy said: "Graduates need to be equipped with the right skills to succeed in the workplace, and today's labour market is bringing home to students the need to take personal responsibility for developing the skills they need."

The Great Recession officially ended last year, and although the nation's unemployment rate is still stubbornly high, the job outlook for soon-to-graduate students is better this year than last.
