Employers are looking for the right attitude and a good work ethic rather than skills in graduates

Around 80% of employers believe a good work ethic and attitude to work will get a graduate their first job rather than skills. The new study conducted from the Centre for Social Justice think-tank comes after man business leaders have said British youngsters are too lazy and ill educated to gain a graduate job.

The survey is in response to a plea from Iain Duncan Smith about our young people a chance rather than taking foreign labour. Many youngsters have poor work ethics and attitudes and employers feel this is the main barrier tackling unemployment in graduates.

Employers are starting to ask for the core subject of Responsibility to be added to reading, writing, and arithmetic teaching in schools. 57% of employers blamed turning down applicants for unskilled jobs or poor presentation. A surprising 29% blamed a lack of academic skills as the problem; around 80% of jobs went to migrant workers because of this as they show a greater work ethic and attitude.

The CSJ report said: 'Many employers told us that they believe students should leave education 'work ready' and that currently too many students fall short.

'Timekeeping, self-awareness, confidence, presentation, communication, teamwork and an ability to understand workplace relationships are too often below the standard required, particularly in younger jobseekers.

'The education system needs to also focus on the fourth R, responsibility, enabling young people to take greater ownership over their future, to seek out the information that they need to make the right choices now, and to understand how their decisions today are likely to affect their future.

With this news graduates are going to have to show an improved work ethic, just having qualifications these days is not enough as many graduate recruiters are inundated with scores of qualified graduates.
