Graduates 'aiming for the top'

Graduates and young people have high ambitions for their financial futures, according to a new study.

Research from Alliance & Leicester indicates that nearly a quarter of people between the ages of 16 and 21 anticipate that they will earn twice the national average or more within the next decade.

However, the report cites recent data stating that the average graduate has £20,000 of debt upon leaving university - a figure which may prompt people to enter the job market as soon as possible.

Helen Palmer, current accounts manager at Alliance & Leicester, commented: "These days, young people have high financial and lifestyle aspirations and getting on the career ladder early can be the quickest way to achieve their goals for many.

"As a group they recognize the growing trends of graduate debt, and in contrast the potential advantages of going straight into employment - especially climbing the first rung of the property ladder and earning substantial amounts of money."

Alliance & Leicester offers some products targeted specifically at younger people.
