Young Britons should not be engulfed with pessimism as they hunt for graduate jobs in the current economic climate, it was suggested today (May 19th). USA Today columnist Laura Petrecca explained that there are a number of options available to university leavers if they are struggling to secure a permanent job. These include enrolling in an adult learning course to boost their skills set and applying for roles which may not be directly connected with the degree they have just completed. "With full-time job opportunities not coming quickly, many students are opting for alternate paths," she wrote. "Some are grabbing unpaid internships just to add 'professional experience' to their resumes, while others are relocating to areas far from friends and family to secure employment." Mr Petrecca talked up the value of starting a business, while also advising graduates against being picky, urging them to accept any reasonable job offer they may receive. Last month, Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, claimed that job cuts in the UK public sector are "inevitable" over the coming few years.
