Companies should recruit graduates if they are serious about finding "high-calibre" managers, it was suggested on Monday (May 17th). Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, conceded that firms will struggle to appoint young talent right now as most are focusing on their exams. However, he explained that there could be a record amount of graduates this year, with those possessing science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) skills likely to be in particularly high demand. "As a long-term strategy, recruiting graduates is an excellent idea," he said. "STEM graduates are a very attractive audience for recruiters because they can bring a lot of skills, are highly intelligent and will be in demand with companies who want managers of the future." Mr Hawes was commenting after a Confederation of British Industry report earlier this week revealed that nearly half of employers (45 per cent) are struggling to recruit STEM graduates. 'Big four' accountancy firm KPMG revealed last month that it plans to recruit 820 graduates for its September 2010 intake, compared with 600 at the same time last year.
