Graduates ought to consider smaller firms when looking at work experience positions, an expert has said. The Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (Agcas) has said that employers should not limit themselves to the larger companies as smaller companies can also offer valuable experience. The group stated that it is a good strategy for graduates to take up work experience, internships and volunteering as a degree may no longer be sufficient. Commenting on the importance of work experience, Elspeth Farrar, a spokesperson for the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, said such activities are "absolutely vital for gaining the breadth of experience that employers are looking for". This comes in light of an Agcas 2007 survey which found that every graduate vacancy receives around 29.2 applicants. ClickAJob chief executive Yngve Traberg has noted that a potential employee who has undertaken work experience and got to know the employer may well find that the job is handed to them "on a plate". In related news, it has been predicted that financial services firms will recruit 15 per cent fewer graduates this year.
