Graduates urged to not ignore teaching

Graduates urged to not ignore teaching Following two recent polls that showed both graduates and the national public have dismissed teaching as a well-paid career that offers decent progression potential, a leading education recruiter has spoken out.

A High Fliers poll of 1,000 UK graduates showed that more than 80 per cent underestimate the starting salary of a teacher, which could be evidence as to why the sector does not always attract the best graduates.

Additionally, a survey of the public by ICM showed that teaching was placed just above journalism and human resources in terms of its limited potential for career progression.

Luke Graham, head of recruitment at the Training and Development Agency for Schools, said: "With huge increases in numbers of people enquiring about careers in teaching and all teacher recruitment targets being met for the first time ever in 2009, the profession is attracting increasing numbers of top quality graduates and career changers.

"Teaching is becoming more and more competitive. It is no longer just a safe job that is alright for a fall-back."

The Conservative Party recently pledged to make teaching an elite career that targets the best graduates if elected to government later this year.ADNFCR-834-ID-19640945-ADNFCR
