GSK short of grads

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has revealed that it is having difficulty filling its research posts because of a lack of science graduates.

The pharmaceutical company has said that it has been forced to look overseas for many of its graduates as the numbers are simply not coming through from the UK.

The company said that only 40 of its 70 new synthetic chemistry research posts at Harlow and Stevenage are filled with graduates from British universities.

"A lot of universities look at laboratory-based courses as something that is very expensive for them to run," said Jackie Hunter, senior vice-president.

"The issue is the number of places. There is a real need across the industry [for more UK graduates]."

"It’s an increasingly globalised labour market."

There are fears that the industry could suffer over the long term if the situation is not rectified.

The UK's pharmaceutical industry directly employs 73,000 people, according to the Times.
