Graduate internships with small businesses, urges FSB

Graduate internships with small businesses, urges FSB More university leavers should be able to access graduate internships with small and medium-sized enterprises in the current difficult job climate, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

The organisation wants to see £3 million of existing £32 million funding for the Graduate Talent Pool scheme go to small businesses in order to create 5,000 internships with them.

University leavers could receive minimum wage and vital experience by taking up the graduate internships, and the government would save up to £600 per person by reducing the number of degree-holders signing up for unemployment benefits.

John Wright, chairman of the FSB, said: "In a graduate internship scheme, graduates can offer key skills to help businesses move forward while at the same time ensuring they are learning new skills and not unemployed at a crucial time in their careers."

This summer's university leavers have recently been given a helping hand from 22-year-old Nottingham University graduate Andy Shovel, who has been matching them with businesses for three-month internships, according to the Daily Express.
