Job hunters 'should be wary of appearance' Graduates about to enter the workforce should be careful not to stand out for the wrong reasons at interview stage, it has been claimed.

While tattoos and piercings are commonplace at university, some employers are less tolerant of such decorations, reports the Guardian.

Joan Pettinggill, an employment partner at commercial law firm HLW, explained that employers can often be within their rights to refuse someone a job because of the way they look.

"The general rule is you can ensure people look satisfactory for business requirements, subject to anti-discrimination legislation," she said.

However, she added that a potential employer could fall foul of the law if they turn down a candidate because of a piercing they have for religious reasons.

Elsewhere, a recent study by the Future Laboratory on behalf of Microsoft predicts that the workplace will be dominated by women by 2033.
