Lifestyle choices 'a factor in the recruitment process'

The way graduates look and the lifestyle choices they make could have a bearing on whether or not a company employs them, new research suggests.

A survey by Nuffield Proactive Health found that approximately 70 per cent of employers associate overweight employees with a lack of self-control and overall laziness.

Indeed, prejudices against how an individual looks could be on the increase within the recruitment process, according to Jo Stuteley, UK director of la creme.

"Issues such as weight, whether you smoke and how much you drink seem to be saying things about your personality and lifestyle choices that they never did before," she commented.

There is nothing to stop an employer discriminating against people on the basis of indulgences which affect their health, she added.

In related news this week, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation warned those looking for jobs, such as graduates, that putting personal details on social networking sites could influence companies' recruitment decisions.
