Around 20,000
graduates were left unemployed after leaving university last year
as graduate jobs are still
recovering
After graduate last year up to 20,000
graduates failed to find work, and many more graduates were taking
on roles that didn’t require a degree, working in administrative
roles or ‘elementary’ positions.
One in 10 graduates (9%) were unemployed after
graduating, which is only slightly less than 2008/09, but 4% higher
than in 2005/06 and was higher among men than with women. The
statistics which were published by the Higher Education Statistics
Agency (HESA) gave details of where students went after graduating
from university in 2009/10.
The average salary for graduates last year was
£20,500, yet with so many graduates unemployed many will have to
turn towards internships and voluntary work which will be unpaid or
a low salary. Companies are using this type of recruitment as cheap
employment, but many who do undertake this type of work often find
themselves first choice when applying to the same company. This
means that many graduates will benefit from a placement year at
university, with many employers looking for graduates with work based
skills.
Universities minister David Willetts said "The
graduate jobs market is showing encouraging signs of improvement,
with an increase in employment for the first time since the
beginning of the recession.
"However, new graduates still need to work
hard to maximise their chances of success."
