Employers look set to benefit from new legislation which came into effect yesterday allowing international graduates to remain in the UK to work for up to one year. As part of the new International Graduates Scheme, non-EEA nationals will be permitted to apply to get a job after finishing their studies. The news bodes well for firms across the UK which are hoping for good candidates to apply for say pharmaceutical sales jobs or even media sales jobs. Government officials hope that the scheme will encourage successful graduates to remain in the country and give them time to apply for a visa. Those who apply for the scheme must have attained a bachelor's or Master's degree, or a PhD or other postgraduate certificate or diploma from a recognised university or higher education institution within the country. It differs from previous schemes in that a person with any grade will be accepted and not just those who have managed to attain a 2:2 or above. Minister for lifelong learning, further and higher education Bill Rammell said: "Today's [May 1st] changes will help ensure Britain continues to attract students who contribute so much to the UK's economic and cultural life. "It will also allow UK employers to benefit from skilled people who have gained UK qualifications and have experience of living in the UK."
