New visa rules make it harder for small companies to recruit foreign graduates

Smaller companies and graduate recruitment schemes are going to find it a lot harder to source graduates from overseas when the government brings the new visa rules into effect.

Companies must be smart in competing against each other to win permission in bringing over non-European Union workers across. With a cap of 21,700 for non-EU work visas for 2011-12 companies will have to quickly learn the new regime to maximise the amount of international workers they employ.

John Walker, Federation of small businesses national chairman, said: “This will have an adverse effect and will act as a barrier to economic growth and competitiveness.” It is also a concern that the FSB will not be able to afford the time and expensive visa applications, where they need to recruit workers quickly.

People earning above £150,000 will be exempt, and priority will be given to employees on higher salaries or areas where there is a shortage of that skill set, which means that business in the catering and healthcare industry won’t be able to bring in lower paid workers.

These restrictions make it harder for graduate schemes that source some workers internationally, and with an uncompetitive tax regime the UK is ever increasingly less attractive for business. Many firms are contemplating moving their graduate schemes outside the UK
