Graduates with a 2:2 degree or less have been handed another boost by energy firm NPower after it joined PricewaterhouseCoopers in launching a graduate recruitment scheme that is less based upon academic achievements and more on practical qualities. The graduate employers are making the moves to stop the degree-level job market being saturated by people carrying a 2:1 degree or more and to try and find applicants with natural business acumen as opposed to a portfolio of glittering exam results, Personnel Today reports. Bob Athwal, head of graduate recruitment at Npower, told Personnel Today: "Something around IQ and emotional intelligence will give us a better picture of a candidate than just an academic 2:1 degree. "I don't want to discriminate against those out there that have the brains but for whatever reasons it hasn't worked out." Recent statistics published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency, showed that nearly half of 2009 graduates (48 per cent) left with an upper second degree.
