Training
and development chosen above that high paying graduate scheme for
many university
leavers
Graduates who are given the opportunity to
learn throughout their graduate job is seen as the best way of
attracting the top graduates. Denise Keating, Chief executive of
the Employers on Age, commented that rising student debt will give
graduates’ more reasons to go for the jobs that offer on the job
training and development.
At a graduate recruitment roundtable in London last
week including Michael Page and the Recruiter Magazine, Ms Keating
said employers must give graduates the opportunity to carry on
their education while earning.
Graduates who apply to these ‘schemes’ do so
because they want the career progression that sales training,
accountancy training etc can provide, not a just out of university
job offering the best paying scheme, but programmes that offer
potential within the company.
Graduate jobs which also offer a rotational
structure during the scheme are also more successful at attracting
the best candidates, with them being able to develop in many broad
ranges of sectors within a business.
These schemes however cost money and many
companies don’t realise this until the schemes are launched. During
the recession many companies cut down on their graduate
recruitment, and many ask will these companies re-open their
schemes or focus on a small amount of graduates to give a more
in-depth training and development programme to ensure these
individuals are at a high standard.
