Pre-Budget report: 10,000 graduate internships

Pre-Budget report: 10,000 graduate internships Graduate job hunters from poor backgrounds will have access to 10,000 graduate internships set up for them by the government, chancellor Alistair Darling has said.

Announcing his pre-Budget report today (December 9th), the minister revealed that he does not want to see diversity in the graduate jobs market being hindered by barriers for students from low-income families.

"I can announce we will offer financial support for up to 10,000 undergraduates from low-income backgrounds to take up short internships in industry, business and the professions," Darling said in the speech.

He added that a one-off levy on bank bonuses of 50 per cent will also provide £550 million funds for a new scheme which will help young people, such as graduates, avoid unemployment.

The Confederation of British Industry and EEF, the UK manufacturers' organisation, recently urged the chancellor to put graduate jobs at the top of the agenda for the pre-Budget report, according to Personnel Today.
