Despite recent increased interest in public sector opportunities, the private sector is likely to be the biggest source of graduate jobs over the coming years, a new report has noted. According to the latest publication from Centre for Cities, as many as 290,000 graduate positions could disappear from across the public sector over the coming years as the government moves to cut spending in a bid to get the economy back on track. In comparison, opportunities in the private sector will be available for the most talented university leaders, the research group's chief executive Dermot Finch has predicted. "In a public spending squeeze UK graduates will continue to find it tough to take their first step on the employment ladder," he said. "The public sector will not drive graduate jobs growth over the next decade. This means more private sector job opportunities will be needed to bridge the gap." These comments come as the Higher Education Careers Services Unit (Hecsu) has reported increasing interest in public sector opportunities among new graduates, though the charity also noted that positions are likely to start to dry up over the next few years on the back of spending cuts.
