Santander, the Spanish bank, is set to increase the number of graduates it employs and the scope of work that successful applicants will undertake while on the scheme in a boost to recent university leavers looking for graduate finance jobs. The high street bank, formerly branded as Abbey in the UK, will take on 230 graduates in 2010, as well as expanding the areas in which degree-level entrants can work in, including corporate banking, HR Magazine reports. Applicants will receive full training, but will also be encouraged to use volunteering as part of their growth in the firm and will be asked to take part in Santander's community programme. Simon Lloyd, HR director at the bank, said: "The uplift in the number of graduates we are taking on demonstrates the strength of the Santander approach to banking. "We see our investment in graduates as an important step on the road to becoming the best commercial bank in the UK." There will be two routes of entry for graduates - the accelerated entry programme that allows candidates confident of their abilities to enter the workforce within a specific role and a more traditional graduate scheme where they experience various different positions.
