Scottish graduate levy abolition blocked

An attempt to abolish the graduate endowment for Scottish students has been defeated in Holyrood, meaning graduates still face a £2,289 charge.

The news, which increases the need for Scotland's graduates to find well-paid employment, comes as a result of a vote by a committee in the Scottish parliament to reject a bill by the SNP-led government to axe the charge.

Karen Whitefield, the convenor of the parliament's education committee, used her casting vote to reject the plan after the remainder of the all-party group was tied over the issue.

Explaining her position, Ms Whitefield said the Scottish government had "missed the opportunity to address the wider issue of student debt and alternative approaches to widening access to further education."

While the bill has been dealt a blow at the committee stage, it will still come before the full parliament in the new year.

However, to pass the legislation the minority SNP administration will require support from members of other parties.
