May witnessing 'soaring graduate job vacancies'

May witnessing 'soaring graduate job vacancies' Graduate job hunters have been buoyed today (May 27th) by claims that vacancies have been surging so far this month.

Mike Hill, chief executive of Graduate Prospects, revealed that his organisation received more adverts for graduate positions last week than in the whole of May 2009.

In addition, he noted that there are a number of opportunities appearing for university leavers in the finance, retail, consultancy and engineering sectors at present.

He said: "In the recession of the early '90s, graduate recruitment picked up even though headline unemployment was still rising and the same thing is happening now.

"It will remain competitive for the next few years as there is a backlog of people who didn't find jobs and maybe went into post-graduate education."

Mr Hill also confirmed that last week, Graduate Prospects saw the monthly number of adverts for graduate jobs surpass the total for May 2008.

Last month, a poll of more than 600 students and graduates by Milkround.com revealed that 58 per cent wanted employers to scrap their minimum requirement for a 2:1 degree.ADNFCR-834-ID-19805337-ADNFCR
