Oxford University has opened its doors to more state students

There were 3154 undergraduate admissions to the university, of which 2,664 were UK students. Just over half, 55.4% were students from the state sector, Oxford University said they are committed to recruiting the best candidates irrespective of their educational background.

The university received 17,144 applications in December 2009 for the current academic year, an increase of 12.2% on the previous year. Of these applications 12,333 were from the UK, and 13.5% of all its UK undergraduate students in 2009-10 were from households earning less than £25,000 a year.

Nearly one in ten were from households were earning less than £16,290. This information comes after the government is pushing universities to increase the intake of students from state schools even though private schools do achieve better academic results on average.
