'Tougher regulations demand quality recruitment agencies'

Recruitment and Employment Confedation (REC)

A senior spokesperson from the Recruitment and Employment Confedation (REC) has predicted that heavier regulation of the financial services will create opportunities for recruiters who can meet new, "more demanding" standards.

Speaking at the launch of the REC's accounting and financial services group, Bill Haynes, chairman of the new branch, told figures from finance and sales recruitment that their sector had seen a "huge amount of change".

Haynes warned that the government's relatively light touch on the industry was going to change, demanding "more discipline, more rigour and more scrutiny". Although this will make the work of recruitment agencies and graduate recruitment companies "more demanding", Haynes also said that this will lead to extra opportunities for high-quality recruiters.

Haynes speech was complemented by that of Martin Tuckwell, a former City financial regulator. Tuckwell said that new regulation will make the work of recruiters even more important.

"The regulator needs to ensure that high standards in terms of qualifications, candidates and ethics are met." he said. "The regulator needs to ensure that high standards in terms of qualification, candidates and ethics are met"

"You role in driving those standards, and finding the right person for the right job, has never been more in demand."

Tuckwell also described several implications for recruiters that increased regulation from the Financial Services Authority might have on their work. As well as a smaller pool of senior talent, unequipped or unwilling to meet new demands for qualifications, he expected increased demand for compliance staff and a reduced demand for independent financial advisers.

Tuckwell also said that he predicted financial companies to increase the number of sales jobs they had to offer, as they reintroduced large-scale sales staff forces to moveremuneration away from commission and return to payment for advice.
