Higher education funding should be overhauled with the introduction of a graduate scheme, one expert has suggested. Writing in the Guardian, Professor Janet Beer explained that there is a need to "change mindsets" among the public in relation to how university expenses are split. The University Alliance, of which Professor Beer is chair, is now calling for universities to implement a system whereby graduates contribute through a tax on their earnings while studying. "These proposals are not an argument for an upfront fee or for higher charges," she wrote in the newspaper. "They do, however, propose significant improvements for more effective use of government subsidies and introduce private finance." Professor Beer, who is also vice-chancellor at Oxford Brookes University, added that graduates benefiting from a university education still have access to the most prestigious and well-paid jobs. Meanwhile, the University and College Union warned recently that higher education budget cuts could see fewer graduate training scheme candidates coming from socially deprived backgrounds in the future.
