Students are going to be given the opportunity to get a cut price deal before accepting their choice of university
Students are going to get the chance to get a last minute deal on university with David Willetts, Universities minister giving universities the right to drop fees to fill courses during clearing.
Critics have banded the move as making the clearing process hectic and students may hold back on accepting a place to get a cheaper price elsewhere. David Willetts has launched this plan in a bid to help universities fill places on courses.
Watchdog experts believe that more disadvantaged students will end up looking for a bargain rather than accepting their first choice. Although universities have to seek agreement from the Office for Fair Acess (OFFA) before discounting fees, and if they do they must discount thier fees for all the students who have applied for a place - not just those that apply later on in the cycle when the price has been lowered.
OFFA have also informed universities that wish to discount thier prices that this may have an unfair impact on students that choose not to apply on the basis of univerisity fees. Students may also leave the application process till last minute in a bid to find a discounted price and miss out on thier preferred course and university.
With many graduates unemployed and more students graduating in the summer, universities are going to be hard pushed to tempt students to further their education and will have to use price to maintain demand, which could throw the system into further chaos.
