One in three students drop out of university every year
More than 76,000 students who started studying in 2008 will fail to graduate this summer according to the Higher Education Statistics. This equates to around 21 per cent for the national drop out, and at London Metropolitan alone the drop out rate for undergraduates is expected to be around 46 per cent and Birbeck University with a 67 per cent drop out rate.
Bolton University is a close second with 40 per cent of undergraduates dropping out, then East London with 36 per cent and London South Bank at 32 per cent. The elite Universities have fared well with most losing up to 10 per cent, however with these figures been released and university fees been increased, universities are going to have to show an improved rate of retention for undergraduates.
These figures have been criticised by some, with some people commentating that many universities making money by giving places to students that are incapable of completing a degree. ‘Some universities have a lot of applicants and are highly selective and some take whoever they can get,’ said Professor Alan Smithers, an education expert at Buckingham University.
