How do I find out further information on Marsh?
Please go to www.marsh.co.uk for further
information.
-
What kind of role can I expect
working for Marsh?
There are a number of roles in
Marsh but the more likely role for a graduate entering the industry
will be one of a Trainee Broker, Trainee Client Adviser/Executive,
Trainee Analyst to name just a few. The Insurance/Risk industry is
very much about relationships whether external with clients or
underwriters/insurers or internal across operating companies,
geographies.
-
What exactly do Insurance Brokers
do?
Our Insurance Brokers can work in
various practices across Marsh - each with their own specialist
knowledge/understanding of the business. Insurance Brokers are
responsible for placing the insurance needs of their client(s),
from the small & medium enterprises to the large corporate
organisation, in the market, ensuring they negotiate the best
possible deal.
-
How do specific degrees relate to
the industry?
Marsh are looking for the best
graduates with the right attitude and behaviours and these can be
with any degree discipline. If however, you have a degree that
specifically relates to a particular industry (i.e. Engineering,
Risk Management, Economics) then yes we will wherever possible seek
to place you in a business where your degree would be of
benefit.
-
What degrees/attributes is the insurance industry looking
for?
Marsh is very open about the degree
an individual may obtain - what is important for us is that it is a
minimum 2.1 or equivalent. If you have a degree that aligns to a
particular business (i.e. Engineering, Risk Management, Economics,
Maritime Law etc) then yes we will wherever possible seek to place
you in a business where your degree would be of benefit. Just as
important is the ability to demonstrate attributes such as impact,
influence, communication, teamwork and others.
-
What does an average day comprise
of?
It can vary depending on the area
you are placed in and the nature of your role - but typically for a
graduate training to be a broker every day offers different
challenges. As a young broker starting in the industry you can
expect to work on a variety of different tasks from discussing
policy changes with underwriters, assisting on new business, to
broking your own risks. Each task requires different proficiencies
and provides you with the chance to nurture and develop your
analytical and interpersonal skills.
-
What international opportunities
are there at Marsh?
Marsh is a Global organisation in
over 100 countries, so yes there will be international
opportunities. However, realistically these opportunities are
unlikely to arise during your two year graduate development
programme. Opportunities are often driven by business need (i.e.
broaden an individuals knowledge of overseas operations in their
particular specialism).
-
What are the advantages of the
Marsh Graduate Development Programme?
Being on the programme will fast
track you through your development. What you will cover in the
two-year programme might take others 5 years. You will be supported
throughout the programme and given every opportunity to shine.
-
What is the format at the end of
the programme?
As you are placed in a specific
business practice from day 1, it is very much hoped at the end of
the two years you will have technically reached a competence in
your role where both you and the business wish to further your
career by remaining in that practice. For the graduates who
graduate at the end of the two years at the very top then they can
expect further opportunities for development as part of their fast
track development.
