I really enjoy meeting new people and working within a small team where I can influence how the company operates.
Who is your current employer?
Indigo Technologies. We are the leading IT and Data Solutions provider in Aberdeen.
Why did you choose sales as a career?
I have also been quite outgoing and really enjoy working with people. During my time at university I had worked as a customer service agent for a leading national electrical supplier. During my time there I regularly exceeded my targets and found my niche for working within a sales environment.
How did you find your experience of the Pareto recruitment and training process?
A bit daunting at first! The recruitment day was really nerve wracking seeing so many lively and enthusiastic people in one room. As the day progressed however it was easy to settle in well, all the trainers were lovely. After being placed at Indigo I really enjoyed travelling to Manchester for the sales training. It was great to share ideas and best practices with such a diverse range of people. The on-going support is also amazing. Even after almost 5 years in my role I know I can pick up the phone to Roisin (My account manager) about anything and she’ll give me guided help or just lend an ear. She is amazing!
When did you start your career?
I started with Indigo in 2008 straight after graduating from The Robert Gordon University.
What was the biggest challenge in the sales environment?
Initially it was being recognised within the industry. As a female in a male dominated environment I definitely had to prove that I was knowledgeable about our products and services. After speaking to my directors we identified that no-one else in Aberdeen was a licensing specialist so that became my niche area. I now deal with all the licensing aspects within our business and advise clients on best practices. It has given us a really good angle to speak to new customers as everyone’s pet hate is licensing and compliance!
What have you found to be the best part of your role?
I really enjoy meeting new people and working within a small team where I can influence how the company operates. For people who have little or no IT knowledge it can be really daunting for them when their IT systems fail. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction knowing that you can give people there assurance that we will have their systems running with little or no downtime and inevitably saving the company thousands and in some cases millions of pounds by ensuring their systems work effectively.
How has your career progressed?
This year I was promoted to Sales manager which was great! We have taken on a trainee through Pareto again so it feels nice to be able to pass on some of my own experiences with her. This year I also won the Northern Star business award for Rising star. The evening was an overwhelming experience, to be recognised in this way was a huge achievement for me and my family were delighted!
How do you see your future developing?
In the next few years I hope to establish a good working Sales Team for Indigo. We have recently moved premises so we have plenty of room to grow. We have achieved year on year growth since we set up in 2005 so I would like for that to continue. Some more awards wouldn’t go amiss either!
Is there any advice you’d offer to others considering a career in sales?
Just go for it! Going through a scheme like Pareto is a great advantage as it gives you a long term support network throughout your career. Also make sure the company offers products and services that interest you and make you passionate. I love Computers and anything technology related. It certainly helps when selling if you can show enthusiasm and passion about the product.
