Tom Bentley

I would like to make a step into sales management. With my training with Pareto, I believe that this goal is achievable.

Who is your current employer?

Temenos – The Banking Software Company

Why did you choose sales as a career?

I believe a career in sales is a meritocracy, in that you are rewarded based on the effort and time you invest in achieving your aims. I also believe sales sets the foundation for any career in business, as this is the heart of any company in the growth and development of increasing your market share.

How did you find your experience of the Pareto recruitment and training process?

Pareto was very efficient in matching me with a role which suited my abilities and interest. The training process I went through has helped me through the different stages of my career, and I believe has put me in good stead for the future.

When did you start your career?

Pareto invited me to an assessment day for Temenos, where I got to meet executives from the company and interview in a number of different scenarios. After being offered a role, I was place in a graduate scheme which touched on a number of different areas in the business. After 12 months, I was offered the role of an account manager within the UK team.

What was the biggest challenge in the sales environment?

When it comes to quarter end or meeting your targets the pressure can be on. Also sales people are expected to work long hours in achieving their aims. However, hard work and perseverance does payoff – not only mentally but financially!

What have you found to be the best part of your role?

I enjoy working in a team, and getting to meet new people on a daily basis. I have quickly learnt new skills which I have been able to apply in different life situations, and made some great friends and contacts along the way in further progressing my career.

How has your career progressed?

Since joining the account management team, I have been responsible for some of our largest banking customers within the United Kingdom and Ireland – and I have been actively involved in defining technology and customer satisfactions strategies within my client base. I have sold over 12 million pounds worth of products and services across a wide range of difference clients. This year I will be more heavily involved in business development, and establishing relationships with new customers within the banking industry.

How do you see your future developing?

I would like to make a step into sales management when the time is right. With my training with Pareto, and the investment Temenos has made in improving my skills, I believe that this goal is achievable.

Is there any advice you’d offer to others considering a career in sales?

Listen and learn from the people around you. The more responsibility you gain, the more you rely on people around you to support and help you progress further. Therefore teamwork is essential in ensuring a successful career in sales.
