What is a Level 3 Apprenticeship?

Level 3 Apprenticeships are an invaluable opportunity for school leavers to get a foot in the door of their chosen industry. This article explains the benefits of Level 3 Apprenticeships, how participants can learn employability skills while working towards a qualification, and how Pareto’s programme can help apprentices achieve their full potential.

Level 3 Apprenticeships

What is a Level 3 Apprenticeship?

Level 3 Apprenticeships are a type of advanced apprenticeship. They are generally considered the same level as two A-level passes, but in addition to the grades, learners take home a wealth of work experience.

How do Level 3 Apprenticeships work?

Level 3 apprentices work nearly full-time, taking on similar responsibilities to anyone else in their role but with a little extra guidance from employers, mentors, or supervisors. Then, either at the office, on-site or a college, they study towards a qualification appropriate to their work experience.

Timing and schedules vary from course to course and job to job, but generally speaking, learners dedicate 80% of their time to work and 20% to study. As a result, they may have a specific block of hours each week reserved for studying or, in some cases, a couple of days every few weeks.

Usually, the level of responsibility will increase as the apprenticeship goes on, allowing learners to gain momentum and build confidence as they learn. Their responsibilities may include collaborating with team management, providing trainees with direct experience, and assisting in negotiations.

Most schemes last for one to two years, but some may extend to four (although this is rare). When completed, apprentices receive a Level 3 Qualification. Apprentices may also receive a BTEC or an NVQ, depending on the service provider and the chosen apprenticeship.

Who can apply for a Level 3 Apprenticeship?

Pretty much anybody can do an apprenticeship. There is no minimum or maximum age and few restrictions surrounding academic achievements. Nonetheless, most providers consider three or more GCSEs necessary to demonstrate the ability to carry out research and work towards an end goal.

Some Level 3 Apprenticeships may ask for one or two A-Levels or a previous Level 3 BTEC, and others may also expect applicants to have prior experience in the industry. The above will depend on the kind of role applicants apply for and the level of responsibility. Researching requirements is essential to avoid any confusion or disappointment.

Most employers want to see that applicants are passionate about the industry and motivated to succeed in the role itself. Therefore, applicants should evidence how they see their career progressing thanks to the apprenticeship in personal statements. Any relevant employment history should be made clear on CVs, too.

Benefits of completing a Level 3 Apprenticeship

Develop practical work skills

Level 3 Apprenticeships help participants develop work-based skills by granting them experience in a particular job or sector. Direct experience in their chosen industry can give them a competitive edge when applying for future roles.

Grow your network

Working alongside experienced professionals and like-minded individuals means apprentices can build up a supportive, professional network. This is not only useful on the job but also helps to secure references and guidance in the future when applying for new roles.

Earn while you learn

Apprentices can expect to be paid the National Apprenticeship Minimum Wage before increasing to the National Minimum Wage. Some employers will pay more, but this is at their discretion.

Receive a respected qualification

Advanced National Certificates are respected across the UK, giving apprentices a leg-up concerning future job prospects. Graduates can be confident about avoiding any student loan debts to pay off, too.

Choose a specialism

Apprentices are trained for a specific job, equipping them with the specialist knowledge required for their role and making for highly employable candidates with attractive career potential. Many Level 3 Apprenticeships have a job happily waiting for them upon completion, promising future stability.
