The great workforce adaptation: Randstad workmonitor 2026

Discover the great workforce adaptation. This 2026 Workmonitor research explores the confidence gap between employers and talent, the impact of AI augmentation, and the rise of self-defined career success.

Unlocking growth in 2026

At Pareto, we know that staying ahead of the curve is the only way to lead. that’s why we’re sharing the 23rd Workmonitor report from our parent company, Randstad. In 2026, the world of work is defined by a distinct contradiction: while 100% of UK employers are optimistic about business growth, only 52% of the workforce shares that confidence.

This "confidence gap" signals a workforce under pressure from rapid technological shifts and economic volatility. Drawing on insights from over 27,000 workers and 1,200 employers, this report provides a blueprint for what Randstad calls the great workforce adaptation. It’s time to move from simply managing talent to actively realigning with them to unlock shared growth.

Key insights from the research

  • Closing the AI reality gap while 66% of UK employers have invested in AI over the last year, a significant "reality gap" persists. 45% of office workers believe ai benefits the company more than the individual, and 27% of UK talent expect AI to have no impact on their work at all.
  • Managers as trust architects in a high-tech environment, human connection is the premium currency. While trust in senior leadership has dipped, the bond between talent and direct managers is strengthening; 76% of UK talent report a strong relationship with their manager.
  • The rise of self-defined success the linear career ladder is outdated. Talent are now redefining success through "portfolio careers," seeking security through variety rather than tenure. While pay is the top attractor, work-life balance is the greatest lever for retention.
